INHERITANCE

Portraits record, memorialize, and elevate the individuals they represent. They have the power to act as portals to reveal hidden truths or operate as mirrors for self-reflection. They are proof of presence, immortalizing the stories of those represented. In my newest suite of drawings, Inheritance, I’m working from images of women in my family and positioning them at the forefront of my familial narrative. While looking to my past through a lens of female experience within Korean culture, I drew from Shamanism, a tradition carried through the centuries by women. Shamanic rituals infuse the mundane with mythology to create shared meanings. Making work from within this space bridges the present to a matrilineal past, offering an alternative pathway to consider the future.
