The Wrestlers
Historically, aggression and fighting have been reserved for men and images and objects depicting male violence often reveal a subtle sexuality. Women as aggressors are generally viewed as a spectacle, catered for a male audience and thus highly sexualized. There is almost always a conflation of violence and sexuality when the combatants are women. My drawings depict women fighting with each other but not for an audience. Revealing an emotional bond between the combatants that oscillates between love and hate. The women are removed from their subconscious sanctions and live somewhere between fantasy and reality. The women in my drawings do not deny the sexuality of their battle; they simply don’t care if anyone is watching.
