artist statement
Historically, aggression and fighting have been reserved for men and the images and objects depicting male violence often reveal a subtle sexuality. Women as aggressors are usually seen as somewhat of a spectacle geared towards male viewers and thus highly sexualized. There is almost always a conflation of violence and sexuality when the combatants are women. My new drawings depict women fighting with each other but not for an audience, revealing an emotional bond that blurs the boundary between love and hate. The women are removed from the subconscious restraint implied by male viewers and live somewhere between fantasy and reality. The fighters in my drawings do not deny the sexuality of their battle; they simply do not care if anyone is watching.
