Foreign Body

Like many during the pandemic, I found myself adrift in my body. Isolation and self-confinement redefined my role and place in society and the risk of potential illness made my body feel unfamiliar. Internalizing racism surrounding the virus alienated me even further from a body I’d grown to understand. Consequently, the face looking back in the mirror was a reminder of the past rather than being a reflection of my present. Foreign Body is a collection of self-portraits made to bridge the gap between who I was before COVID-19 reshaped the world and who I am becoming in this emerging reality. The portraits become tools to identify how these events have transformed my sense of self.
